Taxonomy notes

recent molecular and morphological data has suggested that Hoplomys may be included within Proechimys, however, further work is needed to establish whether or not the relationships observed in molecular studies are a result of past introgression events with Proechimys semispinosus; Hoplomys is tentatively retained as a genus here
